Proficiency-based learning seeks to evaluate a student&#8217;s skills and approach to problems, rather than strictly obtaining the correct answer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Proficiency-based learning (PBL) centers on demonstrations of specific and transparent learning outcomes in which learning is the constant and time is the variable.<\/p>\n<cite><a href=\"https:\/\/education.vermont.gov\/sites\/aoe\/files\/documents\/edu-proficiency-based-learning-what-is-proficiency-based-learning.pdf\">Vermont Agency of Education &#8211; What is Proficiency-Based Learning?<\/a><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Essentially proficiency-based learning has replaced standardized testing as a singular form of measuring student performance. Students that are not meeting proficiency rates are performing below their expected grade level. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where do Vermont students stand as far as proficiency is concerned?<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>The Agency of Education recently released its <a href=\"https:\/\/education.vermont.gov\/sites\/aoe\/files\/documents\/edu-fact-sheet-smarter-balanced-results-20230110_0.pdf\">Preliminary 2022 Statewide Assessment Results<\/a>. Not only that, but only 1 in 4 students are proficient in Math at the 9th grade level!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>What is even more alarming is that in 2022 Vermont spent an average of <strong>$23,423 per pupil<\/strong>, which is the second most in the nation.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"336\" src=\"https:\/\/vpact.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/PPS.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-258\" srcset=\"https:\/\/vpact.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/PPS.jpg 650w, https:\/\/vpact.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/PPS-300x155.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/306693\/us-per-pupil-public-school-expenditure-by-state\/\">Statista &#8211; Per pupil public school expenditure by state U.S. 2022<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">There is a lot of talk about the current proficiency rates in Vermont, but how does Milton compare to the rest of the state?<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>The short answer, not very well. Some grades were excluded due to small sample size and lack of information provided by AOE. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>The current Milton Town School District proposed FY24 budget is requesting to increase the per equalized pupil spending to <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">$19,480.16<\/span><\/strong> (an increase of <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">11.57%<\/span><\/strong> from FY23) but will throwing more money at this issue accomplish what they hope?
